Amidst the five sanctuaries in the district of Biella
The travel day by day
08.30 meeting at Centro Zegna in Trivero and beginning of the trip towards Santuario della Brughiera, immersed in the beautiful Oasi Zegna nature reserve with its slopes towering over the plains below where, in the clearest of days, a good glimpse of the faraway Ligurian pre-Alps can be caught; intimacy and peace characterise this tiny jewel, preserved in its uniqueness over centuries. Pre-packed lunch.
The journey continues towards the Mazzucco Sanctuary, at the core of the Strona Valley, immersed in its homonymous thick green forest. Uphill hike to Rifugio Monte Marca (in Bielmonte), after passing through Bocchetto Sessera, a col where the Cervo and Sessera valley meet.
Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.
Length: 15 km – Difference in elevation: +650 m
Breakfast and hike to Santuario di San Giovanni d’Andorno, the only Italian sanctuary dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, standing in a dominant position over the Cervo Valley. Picnic lunch.
Quick detour to the Tempietto, so called for the uniqueness and beauty, resembling a tiny greek temple. Arrival at Santuario di Oropa, also known as the “Sanctuary under the Sky”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. Dinner and overnight stay in Oropa.
Length: 15 km – Overall difference in elevation: 800 m
After a hearty breakfast, the last stage of the journey unfolds as follows. From the Sanctuary of Oropa we will descend towards Colle di San Carlo and head for Graglia following a trail surrounded by vibrant natural landscapes and silent clusters of farms and houses. Picnic during the hike.
Arrival at the Sanctuary of Graglia, one of the most important Marian shrines in Piedmont. Located in a strategic position with a mild climate due to its exposure, the view stretches out for hundreds of miles meeting the faraway Ligurian Pre-Alps.
In the late afternoon, final shuttle bus transfer from Graglia to Centro Zegna, our starting and finishing point in Trivero.
