Transhumance Experience in Abruzzo
A unique opportunity to contribute to sustainable tourism in Abruzzo: 4 days in nature with the shepherds and their flocks.
The travel day by day
Day 1 – Thursday
Arrival in Anversa degli Abruzzi (AQ) and accommodation in private rooms. Visit of the “Gole del Sagittario” natural park and medieval village. Dinner at the farm’s restaurant.
Day 2 – Friday
Breakfast around 7am, then off to walk through the wild Gole del Sagittario landscape, to reach the small village of Castrovalva, nestled within the gorges and painted by a Dutch artist: Escher. Quick morning snack with pizza, wine and coffee. The walk with the sheep continues through Frattura Vecchia, a town that was totally destroyed by the 1915 earthquake. Lunch along the way.
Overnight accommodation in Frattura, either in a hut with camp beds, or in tents. As a hamlet of Scanno, rebuilt after the earthquake, Frattura offers a wonderful view over the lake. If requested, participants may book accommodation in the countryside. Dinner is shared with the community and citizens of Frattura.
Day 3 – Saturday
The walk continues along the slopes of Mount Genzana, reaching its summit at 2,200 m, then stopping close to a picnic area where lunch will be shared. We will then catch up with the Chiarano flock, in a large and beautiful pasture overlooking Piano delle Cinque Miglia (a grassland plane), in the Roccaraso valley. Dinner served with the ancient and ritual bread soup.
Overnight accommodation either in a “stazzo” (typical shepherd dwelling), or in a cabin on request.
Day 4 – Sunday
Early farewell to the shepherd and flock, who will stay in the mountain pastures, and descent from Chiarano to the Cupa Valley. Arrival and lunch stop in an old farm in the abandoned village of Jovana. The farm is currently the only building used today while the rest of the village has been abandoned since the fifteenth century. After lunch we will walk toward Scanno to visit the village with its traditional activities (jewelery, regional products) and museums (Wool Museum). The afternoon offers a pleasant drive back to Anversa degli Abruzzi with means of transportation provided by the company.
End of the journey and farewell.
For those willing to stay a fourth night, this can be arranged as the farm hosts a cheese making workshop the following morning, comprised of a hearty lunch.
This program may be subject to changes, both before and during the trip, depending on the weather, needs of the travelers and the people hosting the group of travelers. Given the friendly nature of the trip, planned in close collaboration with the communities and villages encountered along the way, goodwill and an easygoing mindset in regards to rural scenarios are required. Cars will be parked and left at the organic farmhouse parking area where extending your stay upon request will be possible.
The trip is not particularly demanding, but fully suitable for elderly people with no physical disabilities nor cardiopulmonary concerns, and for families with children. It does have architectural barriers.
The scheduled trip is available in specific times of the year during the summer months of May, June and July.
